A Film by Hans Anton Rose
The film „PORTITOR“ shows 748 single buttons edited in a mathematical rhythm.
68 buttons shown for a second, followed by 68 buttons shown in 3/20 seconds. This structure repeats 11 times, followed by another 11 sequences, where the buttons which were shown before for a second, get exchanged with the ones that were shown for 3/20 seconds and vice versa.
The simple and rhythmic sound structure augments his speed towards a high point and returns mirrorinverted to an interval of a single note.
This montage allows both, to watch single buttons per second and enables the perception of a coalescence of the individual to an ensemble in the rapidly edited sequences.
The repetitive, formally consistent aspect of the 15 minute lasting editing sequences, showing hundreds of different buttons, leads to a contemplative condition, which permits room for diverse associations.
Due to the massiv visual enlargement on screen, the buttens experience an enhancement of the original object, an alienation and therefore offer a new appraisal of form and content.
This project developed from a long duration art project, for which buttons where collected continuously over the past 10 years, to manifest in Hans Anton Rose’s Installation „Et Pluribus Unum“ (out of many, one).
The sociocultural phenomenom of migration builds the center point, the sea (of buttons) provides us with the metaphore together with the ferrymen( Portitor )as a vehikel for the souls of the voyager.
